A BLAST FROM THE SUMMER PAST, THE 2009

Woody Guthrie New York City Birthday Bash

at The Bowery Poetry Club, 308 Bowery at Bleecker St., NYC

This year's show on Sunday, July 12, was our ninth, and it was outstanding and amazing.
We were joined by the one and only Oscar Brand, who has had a radio show devoted to folk music and the like for an incredible
(get this!) sixty years! He knew Woody personally and told Woody stories in addition to singing three songs,
accompanied by his son Jordan on bass guitar.

Our lineup also included our usual crew: Jessica Feinbloom, Anne Price, Steve Suffet, Gina Tlamsa, Carlos Vasquez, and myself.  Kudos to everyone for a job well done, and Steve Suffet especially, for being our intrepid producer.  We were also joined this year by Robin Greenstein, a remarkable musician who made us all look and sound better. Thank you, Robin.

Here's a taste of what I mean, with Robin on guitar. The song is Woody's "Mean Talkin' Blues".
Check it out.

I videotaped the entire evening and created three Songs of Freedom episodes that will be playing on cable television in NYC
(see the schedule) and everywhere on the internet. You can see them right now on blip.tv.
